Preparing Outlet and Switch Boxes for New Construction Electrical Work

Some construction terms used in Korea may not have an exact English equivalent. In those cases, I’ll describe them in simple terms based on their function and how they are used on site.

One of the most common items prepared during electrical work for a new building is the box that will be embedded in the concrete wall for outlets and switches.

The outlets and switches we commonly see on finished walls will eventually be installed into these boxes.

The boxes need to be prepared in advance and secured between the reinforcing bars according to the electrical drawings so that the work can stay on schedule before the concrete pour.

There is a small amount of play between the box and its cover, which can allow concrete to enter the box during the pour. The box or cover can also be damaged by the impact and pressure during concrete placement. In particular, the screw mounting points used later to install outlets and switches can be relatively easy to damage.

For this reason, we secure the covers to the boxes with heavy-duty adhesive tape. This helps prevent concrete from entering the boxes and also reduces the chance of the covers or boxes being damaged during the concrete pour.

While the reinforcing steel for the walls is being assembled, we cut and prepare short pieces of rebar and attach them to the boxes in advance. These pieces of rebar will later be used to secure and position the boxes within the wall reinforcement.

When a box is placed against the wall reinforcement at its actual installation location, the position of the reinforcing bars can sometimes cause the box to sit too far forward or too far back. Depending on the situation, the attachment position can be changed and the rebar fixed to the box can be adjusted to position the box correctly.

It is important that the rebar is firmly attached to the box. If the box can move independently from the rebar attached to it, securing that rebar to the wall reinforcement with tie wire will not keep the box itself firmly in position.

Once the box and rebar have been securely assembled like this, the box is ready to be installed within the wall reinforcement.

In the next post, I’ll show how these prepared boxes are actually positioned and secured in the wall before the concrete is poured.
