Preparing the Grounding Conduit for a Lightning Protection System in New Construction
Lightning protection grounding is one of the electrical work processes that continues as the building structure rises.
In this post, I’ll document the preparation of the pull boxes and conduit used to route a grounding conductor from the basement toward the rooftop lightning protection system before the conductor itself is installed.
Why We Use a Pull Box for the Grounding Conductor
The pull box used for this work is one of the boxes that I prepared earlier during the outlet and switch box preparation process.
The grounding conductor for the lightning protection system needs to continue upward from the basement as the building structure rises toward the rooftop.
Because the grounding conductor is thick, pushing and pulling it through a long continuous conduit run can be difficult. It can also make inspection and repair more difficult if a problem occurs somewhere along the route.
For this reason, pull boxes are installed at intermediate points to provide accessible spaces for guiding and pulling the grounding conductor.
A larger custom-made enclosure could also be used, but this location does not serve as a grounding terminal box. Its purpose is simply to provide an intermediate working space along the conductor route, so using a pull box is a more economical solution for this application.
Drilling the Pull Box for Conduit Connections

Before connecting the conduit to the pull box, openings need to be made for the conduit connectors.
A knockout punch can be useful when many openings need to be made. However, when there are only a few holes and I need to work quickly, I often use a step drill bit to make openings of the required size.
The conduit connectors can then be installed in these openings, preparing the pull box for the conduit connections.
Positioning and Securing the Pull Box

Before installing the pull box, I check the drawings and the actual site conditions and mark its installation position.
Since the box will be embedded in the concrete wall, both its position and depth need to be checked so that it does not protrude beyond the finished wall surface after the concrete is poured.
For this installation, I used the layout lines marked on the floor as a reference to determine the wall position and set the depth of the box accordingly.
The method used to secure the pull box is similar to the method used previously for the outlet and switch boxes.
The pull box is positioned using support bars and then firmly secured to the reinforcing bars with tie wire. This helps prevent the box from shifting during the concrete pour.
Connecting the Lower Conduit to the Pull Box
After securing the pull box, I connect the conduit that was previously routed upward from below in preparation for the grounding work.
In the next stage of the work, the grounding conductor will be pulled through this conduit and into the pull box.
Because a thick grounding conductor will eventually pass through it, the conduit route through the reinforcing bars is also important.
Where the lower conduit enters the connector, I form a smooth bend rather than making a sharp turn.
Sharp bends or unnecessary changes in direction can make it much more difficult to push and pull the grounding conductor through the conduit later.
The connection between the conduit and connector is also secured with tie wire. This provides additional support and helps prevent the conduit from moving or separating from the connector during the concrete pour.
Routing the Conduit Toward the Rooftop

Conduit is also connected to the upper side of the pull box so that the grounding conductor can continue upward as construction progresses.
The upper conduit is positioned as vertically and straight as practical. Reducing unnecessary bends makes it easier to pull the grounding conductor upward during the next stage of the work.
Ultimately, installing the pull box, creating a smooth route for the lower conduit, and keeping the upper conduit as straight as possible all serve the same purpose: making the later installation of the thick grounding conductor easier and more manageable.
This does not complete the grounding work. The grounding and lightning protection work will continue as the building structure rises.
In this post, I covered the preparation of the pull box and conduit before installing the grounding conductor. In the next post, I’ll continue with the actual installation of the grounding conductor through this conduit route.
